Everyone loves “Top 10” style blog posts.
Consumers (readers) love them because they’re easy to digest. With an ever-increasing amount of information available to consumers on any given topic, more and more readers are simply skimming content. Lists provide readers with a quick easy takeaway of what the author believes is important, without having to spend unnecessary time reading multiple news articles or blog posts. “Top 10” style lists in particular also provide readers a certain comfort level that whatever they’re reading is authoritative: the top, best, or otherwise most important information they need.
Brands love them because “Top 10” style lists are proven to generate higher traffic and engagement than other styles of posts. They’re also – in theory – much easier to write, providing a higher return on engagement and traffic with reduced effort.
We (marketing folks) love them because they’re a great way for brands to connect with target demographics. Consumers love to compare. Since “top” (or any other superlative or comparative adjective) is subjective, consumers naturally compare their judgements and their impressions with the author’s. Top 10 style lists offer an easy way for shoppers to compare not only X Product/Brand vs. Z Product/Brand, but also to determine how they align with a particular brand’s culture and values. So Top 10 style list posts are a great way to show your target demographics why your brand is the “right” fit for them.
