Cyber fraud and identity theft are huge threats in today’s cyberspace world of online accounts and internet activity. If you aren’t updating your passwords at least annually, consider this: cybersecurity is a multi-billion dollar industry, expecting to reach $170 billion by 2020!
While your passwords aren’t necessarily going to protect you from all cyber attacks (or credit card theft at retailers or a host of other fraudulent scams), passwords are your first defense against hackers, and something you can easily manage yourself. If you don’t, you could be vulnerable to some serious cyber hacking.
Yet the majority of people rarely update their passwords unless required to by the account they’re trying to access.
Why? Because the thought of updating a gazillion different account passwords – AND trying to remember them – is so overwhelming most just never get around to it. Or gamble against the odds that they won’t get hacked.
If you’re not in the habit of regularly updating your passwords, at least once a year take the time to ensure your online security. Change your passwords, making sure they’re unique, strong passwords, and if you can’t commit them all to memory (which, let’s face it, who can these days?), save them in a password protected file – yes, another password! – that is NOT named with something easy for hackers to find like “my passwords“.
Still a bit overwhelming? Here are a few Tips to help make annually updating your passwords (relatively) painless.
