Are #you #guilty #of #unnecessary #hashtagging?
Hashtags continue to be one of the most important ways to leverage your social media marketing. In short, hashtags are best described as a pound symbol (#) followed by a keyword or keyword phrase. They’re used as a way to categorize your social shares so that people looking for information about a particular topic can find your content when searching under a specific hashtag.
Unfortunately, unnecessary hashtagging can do more damage than having no hashtags at all.
- Statistics show that the use of 1-2 hashtags increases engagement, however when you use more than two hashtags, your engagement actually drops (by an average of 17 percent on Twitter). Note: This isn’t true for Instagram, which conversely does better with more hashtags (11+). Of course, you still need to ensure is that your hashtags are relevant, not unnecessarily hashtagged. Read the recently updated A Scientific Guide to Hashtags: How Many, Which Ones, and Where To Use Them by Buffer for more statistical information.
- Too many hashtags in the copy makes reading posts difficult for your viewers.
- Gives the impression of lack of social media savvy or poor social etiquette. (Think of it like a form of spamming your followers…)
- Can be perceived as your brand being desperate for attention. (#lookatme #lookatwhatIwrote #showmyposteverywhere #toeverybody)
