When’s the last time you actually analyzed your Google Analytics reports?
If you’re like most small business owners, you probably receive monthly Google Analytics reporting and spend only a few minutes looking to verify one thing: an increase in reported numbers from the previous month.
While improved metrics overall are of course what you’re shooting for, you also need to fully analyze your Google Analytics reports to understand contributing factors to the individual data metrics reported.
Imagine you’re a sales manager for a car dealership. You’re presumably tasked with not only meeting sales goals, but setting the goals and growing sales monthly. Every month you look at the sales report and can tell whether or not you’ve met that month’s sales goals.
But how do you know what to do to increase sales?
How do you know what to do differently if you are falling short of your goals?
Google Analytics provide an abundance of insights to help you understand exactly what marketing strategies are working (or not), but the reports only provide the data. It’s up to you to analyze the data in order to determine what to do with it.
Keep in mind also that, unless you understand what’s contributing to the data, your Google Analytics reports may in fact be providing a false picture of what’s going on.
For example: If your organic Search Traffic numbers jump up dramatically, and continue to see improved growth, you’re probably pretty happy every month. But have you filtered out the data from spam bots? If not, your Google Analytics reports are likely misrepresenting the number of actual visitors to your website.
